Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade reveal 60 surfers took to the water at once as lockdown rules eased

Up to 60 surfers took to the water at Tynemouth at once over the weekend after some lockdown restrictions were eased.

The Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade said they were on patrol over the last few days but are "grateful" that people were responsible.

They did get called to one incident at Cullercoats Bay after someone thought a kayaker was in trouble but it was a false alarm.

The TVLB and the Cullercoats RNLI attended the scene in a lifeboat to check on the kayaker but he confirmed he was actually fishing and was in no danger.

A spokesman for the TVLB said: "Over the weekend the Brigade, along with colleagues from Blyth Coastguard Rescue Team, have carried out coastal patrols throughout the North Tyneside area.

"Although there has been a noticeable increase in members of the public at the coast, with at one point over 60 surfers counted in the water at Tynemouth Longsands, we are very grateful for the responsible and safe approach everyone has taken.

"As an emergency service, we accept that there may be an element of risk in what we do, but at these extraordinary times we wish this to remain as low as possible, and thank everyone who has helped us achieve this over the weekend.

"However, this will need to continue, especially as we are not anticipating the usual RNLI Lifeguard service this summer, and certainly do not anticipate it starting next weekend as originally planned."
