Tynemouth scout hut plans set to be scrapped in face of mounting opposition

Plans to turn a former scout hut into a cafe and tourism centre are set to be withdrawn after scores of people objected to them.

Grizzley’s Tynemouth Ltd put forward proposals to knock down the empty Sea Scout Hut at Priors Haven, in Tynemouth, and build a new hub.

The site, which would have created between 30 and 50 jobs, was to include a coffee shop and restaurant, toilet facilities, a visitor centre and tourist exchange promoting visitor attractions, events and facilities.

It was also going to have a centre running programmes for business leaders as well as an educational hub for the community.

However, there were more than 100 objections to the scheme, with several people saying there was no need for another food and drink establishment in Tynemouth. There were also concerns about traffic and potential parking problems.

Now the firm has indicated that it plans to withdraw the proposals.

In a message on North Tyneside Council's planning website, the applicant said: "I am the person who responded to the formal tender process and won the opportunity to bid for this project. I have read and noted all the comments.

"I never intended to upset people or cause objections. My primary interest is in leadership development/training, outward bound activity.

"Yes many of the comments refer to licence, alcohol, restaurant and they are right. I am neither a bar person nor a restaurant owner.

"I am a professional coach and doctor who makes a living out of running leadership development programmes around the world and thought my hometown would benefit from this type of activity, in profile, jobs and inward investment.

"When I applied, I applied as openly as possible, as I was advised to ask for everything and then scale back.

"I have no intent of trying to impose a building that does not enhance this area or Tynemouth. We did offer to include public toilets.

"I have no intention of proceeding in the face of objections from residents. I see the council tomorrow and will ask them to pause the application until I meet Friends of Tynemouth and Friends of the Haven and only, if I can agree a way forward with them will I personally proceed.

"That is my assurance in writing here. My view is simple. I want to try and do good. Educate, train and improve people. I have no desire to upset or cause aghast. If I cannot find a way to resolve with the community I will withdraw completely from it."

Later, a further message was posted, saying the application was being withdrawn.

On Monday, the proposal was still live on the council website and the authority said the plan had not yet been officially withdrawn.
