Tynemouth's Blue Reef Aquarium gears up to welcome a dinosaur and a mermaid

Tynemouth's Blue Reef Aquarium is gearing up to welcome two special guests for the school holidays.

Just like unicorns, mermaids are one of those magical creatures that have fans all over the world.

And if you've got any mermaid fans in the family, you'll need to get your diary cleared for later this month as Blue Reef Aquarium will dedicate a two-day event to the underwater characters.

Thanks, in no small part, to hit Disney animation The Little Mermaid, mermaids became and stayed massively popular with children the world over.

And Blue Reef will host their Mermaid Weekend on Saturday, August 17 and Sunday, August 18.

Revealing all on Facebook, they posted "For one weekend only our favourite mermaid is back.

"She will be swimming along to Tynemouth and can’t wait to meet you all.

"Come along and meet Sirena and hear her tales of the sea.

10 tips to keep your kids safe in the summer holidays

Meeting Sirena is included in Blue Reef admission, there will be no extra charge once you're in.

The Mermaid Weekend is one of a number of themed events at Blue Reef over the school holidays.

Don't be surprised if you hear some roaring next weekend as on Saturday, August 10, Blue Reef will welcome Pete the T-Rex.

The giant giant animatronic dinosaur will be at the Aquarium from 10am - 4pm and just like with Sirena, meeting him will be included in normal admission prices.
