Tynemouth Morrisons faces backlash over plans to sell alcohol 24 hours a day

A Tyneside supermarket has come under fire for its bid to sell booze round the clock.

Morrisons, on Preston North Road, in Tynemouth, has applied for permission to sell alcohol 24 hours a day.

It has also applied for a "late night refreshment" licence, which would allow it to serve hot food and drink between 11pm and 5am.

Currently the supermarket is allowed to sell alcohol between 6am and midnight.

However, North Tyneside Council's environmental health department has objected to the proposals, saying they would be noisy.

A report from environmental health officer Claire Wilson said extra noise from the store, which currently closes at 10pm, would affect residents on nearby Ashford Close and Bishopbourne Court.

She wrote: "The variation of hours to permit 24 hour sales of alcohol will result in increased noise in the area associated with noise from customers visiting the store and potential noise from delivery operations if an extended delivery service is provided.

"Noise will arise from vehicles using the car park, loud voices of customers and clatter and bangs from trolleys and the slamming of car doors and car boots."

This was backed up by a concerned resident, who claimed that the supermarket and neighbouring premises are already causing a "litany of problems".

They also raised concerns about noise, cooking smells and extra traffic.

Another resident wrote: "From a health perspective there is a concern of alcohol being available 24/7 and the associated risks and health concerns that can bring."

Morrisons have been approached for comment.

The council's licensing committee will hear the application on Thursday.
