Tynemouth Life Brigade help rescue man in 'distressed state' on shoreline at Longsands

Lifeboat rescue volunteers helped bring a "distressed" man to safety from the water at Tynemouth on Saturday.

Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade was called out just before 1.30pm on Saturday after the Coastguard was called over concern for the man, said to be spotted at the waterline in the middle of Longsands beach.

Peter Lilley, Captain of the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade, said: " HM Coastguard paged the Brigade, Blyth Coastguard Rescue Team and Cullercoats RNLI after they received a 999 call raising concern for the safety of a man on the waterline in the middle of Tynemouth Longsands.

"Brigade members, who were on station carrying out routine maintenance, were on scene within 5 minutes of the call and located the man sitting on rocks.

"Team members then supported the casualty for around 20 minutes before officers from Northumbria Police arrived and the two organisations helped the man off the beach so that he could receive care and support from the Police."

The callout marked the 47th time the Brigade has been called out to incidents and emergencies on the North Tyneside coast in 2021.

Earlier that day, they had also been called to Marsden, in South Tyneside, to help in a police search for a missing man.

However, the units were stood down as the missing person was found safe by police while they were on their way to the area.
