Tynemouth constituency General Election results 2017: Full standings, MP and reaction

Labour's Alan Campbell has told of his delight after he comfortably won in Tynemouth - a seat he has kept for 20 years.

Mr Campbell, a former teacher who first became MP in 1997, was declared winner once again with 32,395 votes, beating Conservative Nick Varley into second place.

The Tory candidate received 20,729 votes, while Liberal Democrat John Appleby had 1,724, UKIP’s Stuart Houghton had 1,257, Julia Erskine for the Green party scored 629 and independent candidate Anthony Jull ‘The Durham Cobbler’ had 124.

Mr Campbell said he fought his campaign on local issues and was delighted to have won the seat again.

He added: “I’m absolutely over the moon, especially after increasing the majority here and having seen off a very serious threat from the Conservative Party.

“We fought a very hard local campaign and my record on important issues was what mattered for local people, including regeneration, health and education.

“The Conservative party’s campaign on Brexit simply failed to take off.”

The other candidates thanked the people who worked on their campaigns and the residents who voted for them.

Lib Dem John Appleby congratulated Mr Campbell on his win and wished him success.

Turnout in Tynemouth was 74.48% - a total of 56,964 votes.

Over the 20th Century the Tories dominated in Tynemouth, although Labour’s Grace Coleman held the seat between 1945 and 1950. Between 1950 and 1997 the Tories won in Tynemouth, before Alan Campbell was elected. Mr Campbell has held the seat since.
