Tynemouth and South Shields piers closed off due to anti-social behaviour

The piers in Tynemouth and South Shields have been closed due to a rise in anti-social behaviour.

The structures, which are popular with walkers on both sides of the River Tyne, have been temporarily shut by the Port of Tyne.

The decision was made after reports were received of incidents including littering and people using the piers as a toilet.

The Port of Tyne says specialist cleaners will be brought in and the piers will then be reopened.

Steven Clapperton, maritime director and harbour master, said: "Unfortunately, in recent weeks, we have seen a significant increase in anti-social behaviour on the North and South piers, included littering, dumping of fishing gear, and using the piers as a toilet.

"The safety of our employees and the public is our primary consideration, and we have been left with no option but to close the piers until we have had specialist cleaners on site.

"Hopefully this will be completed soon and we will be able to reopen the piers for everyone to safely enjoy.

"The piers are a fantastic asset for our region and we are happy for people to visit, provided they act responsibly – only use the piers during the day when the gates open, be respectful of other visitors, and take any rubbish away with them."
