Tyne Tunnel toll increase to hit next week - here's how much it will cost you

Toll prices for the Tyne Tunnel are going up next week.

Tyneside drivers will see a hike in the cost of using the busy route which will come into effect on Monday, May 13.

Car users will need to pay an extra 10p for every journey and it will go up by 20p for heavy goods vehicles.

It means it will now cost £1.80 for commuters and £3.60 for heavy goods vehicles.

The 10% discount for customers who pre-pay will remain in place and motorbikes and service buses will continue to use the tunnel for free.

The Tyne Tunnels - which are overseen by local councillors but operated by the private firm TT2 - are self-financing and don't receive any council tax.

As well as general maintenance and operating costs, cash collected from customers is still being used to pay off the cost of building the second tunnel.

The increase was agreed by the Tyne and Wear Sub-Committee as part of the budget in January.

Road users have been reminded about the increase via electronic message signs on the approach to each tunnel.

The Tyne Tunnel now has an app - this is how it works
