Tyler Smith joins League One rivals after being recalled from Bristol Rovers loan by Sheffield United

Tyler Smith's loan at Bristol Rovers has come to an early end, with the striker moving to League One rivals Rochdale.

The striker has been recalled from the Gas by parent club Sheffield United, after initially joining on a season-long loan move in July, and has moved to Spotlands.

Smith, 21, scored five goals in 28 appearances in all competition for Rovers, but struggled for regular starts in the first half of the season.

Nine of his 20 League One appearances for Rovers came from the bench.

His last appearance for Rovers was in Boxing Day's 2-1 defeat to AFC Wimbledon, which was new manager Ben Garner's first game in charge.

Since then, Smith has been out of action due to picking up an injury when kicking an object in frustration during training.

He has now moved to Rochdale for the rest of the season.

Smith's departure from the Gas could well have implications for Victor Adeboyejo, whose loan from Barnsley was expected to come to an end this month, and also Tom Nichols, who has been informed he can find a new club.
