Tyler Roberts issues apology after Leeds United forward sent home early by Wales for 'breach of protocol'

Leeds United forward Tyler Roberts has issued an apology after he was sent home early from the Wales camp for breaching protocol.

The Welsh FA confirmed that the 22-year-old was one of three players alongside Hal Robson-Kanu and Rabbi Matondo to have been released from the Wales squad ahead tomorrow night's World Cup qualifier against the Czech Republic.

Roberts, who won his 13th cap when he started against Mexico in Saturday's 1-0 victory and came off the bench against Belgium last week, has apologised on social media for staying up 'later than the set time' in the team hotel.

"Gutted to be leaving the camp early," he posted on his Instagram Stories. "But rules are rules I shouldn't have been up in the hotel later than the set time. Sorry to the team, staff and Wales fans. I will continue to work as hard as I can to earn my place in the squad for the Euros."

A statement from the Wales FA said:

"Three members of the Cymru senior national squad – Hal Robson-Kanu, Rabbi Matondo and Tyler Roberts – have been released from the Welsh camp today after breaching FAW protocol.

"The three players will be returning to their respective clubs this afternoon.

"The FAW will not be making any further comment."

LeedsLive understands that the trio had breached a curfew at the team hotel with no suggestions that any Covid-19 protocols have been breached.

Roberts is aiming to earn a place in the Wales squad for this summer's rescheduled European Championship, where they were drawn alongside Switerland, Turkey and Italy in the group stage.
