Tyler Roberts explains why he has his initial on his Leeds United shirt

Leeds United attacker Tyler Roberts has opened up on just why he has his first initial on the back of his shirt alongside his surname.

Ever since Roberts, who will be desperate to help Leeds achieve their ambitions of returning to the Premier League, arrived at Elland Road back in January 2018, he has always worn 'T. Roberts' on the back of his shirt opposed to just his surname.

It is, in truth, fairly uncommon for a player to have his first initial on the back of his shirt unless there is a player within the club with the exact same surname.

For Leeds, of course, there is only one Roberts at the club, which may offer a sense of confusion as to why the Wales international insists on having the back of his shirt printed with his first initial.

Now, though, the three-goal forward has revealed as to why he insists on having the letter 'T' printed on the back of his shirt, insisting that it makes him feel "different."

"On my first loan at Oxford [United] I always thought it was cool [to have his first initial on the back of his shirt]," Roberts revealed in a social media Q&A session shared on Leeds' Twitter account.

"When I used to watch players and they had the first letter of their first name, then a dot, and then their last name it was a bit different and I have always wanted to be different from the normal.

"So, I had it there [Oxford]. I didn't have it at Shrewsbury [Town], but I took it at Walsall.

"When I came to Leeds, they gave me 'Roberts' and I kind of questioned it to see if I could have 'T dot,' and because I had had it previously I was allowed it.

"I just like it. It fits me better."

As well as having his first initial and his surname on the back of his Leeds shirt, the Wales international, who would have been hoping to have represented his country at this summer's European Championships, also dons number 11.

Explaining as to why that particular number means so much to him, Roberts added: "It was a number that has got a lot of history at Leeds, which is a big thing. It was kind of a challenge to fill the shirt that had been worn by the player before.

"I like the number. I always used to watch Neymar and he wore number 11, so I kind of always liked that number."
