Tyler Collins endeared himself to the home crowd on Monday night as he swore at his own fans following a fielding error.
The Detroit Tigers outfielder lost a ball in the lights during his team’s victory over the Oakland A’s and was roundly booed. He responded by flipping the bird at the crowd and appearing to say “Fuck everybody”.
The 25-year-old later said he regretted his actions. “To be at home and to hear boos after that play hit a trigger inside of me and I lashed out completely inappropriately,” Collins said after Detroit’s 7-3 win. “I’m absolutely embarrassed it happened and I’m very sorry to everybody in Detroit.”
The Tigers manager said Collins’ conduct was unacceptable. “Clearly, it’s something that can’t happen,” Brad Ausmus said. “I spoke to Tyler immediately in the dugout, in the tunnel, after it happened and I spoke to him after the game. He regrets it.”
Collins has had a bad start to the season, and was batting .100 with one RBI coming into Monday’s game.
