Tyler Chatwood's return to rotation short-lived in Cubs' 3-1 loss to the Pirates

PITTSBURGH _ Tyler Chatwood's chance at redemption Saturday night lasted only two-plus innings as the Cubs lost to the Pirates 3-1 at PNC Park.

The loss snapped the Cubs' three-game winning streak.

Chatwood, inserted into the rotation because of Mike Montgomery's sore left shoulder, suffered recurring control problems that resulted in manager Joe Maddon pulling him after Chatwood issued his third walk to open the third.

Chatwood issued two walks to start the second that led to three runs. This was Chatwood's first start since July 26, but he still leads the National League with 93 walks, while his ERA swelled to 5.22.

Chatwood threw only 37 pitches, 21 for strikes. He was aided by a double play in the first.

Ben Zobrist, the Cubs' fourth leadoff hitter in their last five games, hit a solo home run in the third.

Zobrist is batting .386 since the All-Star break, third best in the National League behind Justin Turner of the Dodgers (.404) and Austin Jackson of the Mets (.400).

The Cubs mounted a threat in the fifth, but Addison Russell struck out (and is in a 1-for-18 slump), and Zobrist flied to center.

Pirates starter Joe Musgrove limited the Cubs to five hits while striking out seven in seven innings. Felipe Rivero struck out Javier Baez and Kyle Schwarber before inducing Willson Contreras to fly to right to end the game.

The Cubs were 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.
