Tyler Blackett: The Manchester United graduate joining Nottingham Forest

Tyler Blackett has become Nottingham Forest's second summer signing, after he penned a two-year deal at the City Ground on Saturday morning.

The 26-year-old defender, who came through the academy at Manchester United joins Jack Colback in arriving on Trentside prior to the start of pre-season training next week.

Blackett is expected to be closely followed by striker Lyle Taylor as boss Sabri Lamouchi looks to get his business done early.

So, what more do we know about the player?

Early days

Blackett started out at hometown club Manchester United, joining when he was only eight years old.

He signed his first professional contract a decade later and cut his teeth in senior football with loan spells at Blackpool and Birmingham City.

Blackett forced his way into first-team contention at Old Trafford under Louis van Gaal and made a total of 12 senior appearances for the club.

A further loan stint in 2015-16, spending the season in Scotland with Celtic.

He has represented England at youth level, all the way up to the under-21s.

Moving on

Blackett's time at United came to an end in the summer of 2016 when he joined Championship side Reading, who were managed by former Red Devils defender Jaap Stam at the time.

“It’s one of those things. You don’t want to leave a big club like Manchester United," he said at the time.

“But for me personally I needed to take a step forward in terms of playing time, getting games and obviously under the right manager as well."

The defender, who can play at left-back, centre-back or even defensive midfield, played 116 games for the Royals, including 20 during the 2019-20 season.

He was linked with a move to Turkey in January, to join Trabzonspor or Ankaragucu, but a deal never materialised.

Blackett was one of six players released by Reading this summer, along with two ex-Forest men Chris Gunter and Garath McCleary.

What now?

Blackett had been linked with a move to Major League Soccer side Cincinnati FC, who are managed by his former boss Stam.

He's agreed a two-year contract at Forest with the option for a third, and will provide competition for the likes of Joe Worrall, Tobias Figueiredo and Yuri Ribeiro.

The Reds are short of left-back cover ahead of the new season, with Yuri Ribeiro the only player currently fit and available, with January arrival Gaetan Bong injured having featured just once since his winter arrival from Brighton.
