DETROIT _ Just when it looked like the Detroit Tigers were about to cruise to the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 MLB Draft, they won.
In the series finale of a four-game series at Comerica Park, rookie left-hander Tyler Alexander pitched the best game of his young career and outfielder Victor Reyes continued his hot hitting.
In the 5-2 win, Alexander (1-3) allowed one run over six innings. He allowed four hits, struck out three batters and walked none. It was his first major league win.
Reyes hit a lead-off triple in the bottom of the first inning. One batter later, second baseman Jordy Mercer _ the team's hottest hitter since the All-Star break _ hit his ninth home run of the season.
But Mercer's home run alone wasn't enough for the Tigers.
Reyes' two-run double in the sixth inning proved to be the difference. On his line drive to left-center field, he was caught between second and third base, but easily plated two runs with the hit.
The Tigers won the season series against the Orioles, 4-3, therefore holding the tiebreaker should the two teams finish with the same record at the end of the season.
The Tigers (45-104) are 3 { games behind of the Orioles (49-101), with 14 games to play.
