The Falcons announced a three-year contract extension for offensive lineman Ty Sambrailo on Tuesday. Now, thanks to a report by Mike Garafolo at NFL Network we have some more details. Apparently, Sambrailo’s new deal includes some significant money: he can earn up to $18 million over the life of the deal.
Potentially paying Sambrailo $6 million per season means the Falcons likely see him as a starting offensive lineman going forward. The most obvious question is where they plan to play him. He played decently in place of Ryan Schraeder at right tackle, so it’s possible they see him as the new starter there, as Garafolo mentions.
However, Sambrailo also slid inside to play left guard late in the year, so right tackle is not set in stone.
Either way, it would be a surprise if the team does not cut Schraeder in the coming days, unless he agrees to a significant pay-cut. It’s clear that major changes are coming to the unit this year.
