Twycross Zoo staff 'devastated' as 'beloved' giraffe dies after procedure

A giraffe from Twycross Zoo has died following an operation to correct the animal's deformed hoof.

The giraffe named Epesi died on Monday September 23 after a high risk operation.

Staff at the zoo have been left "devastated", reports DerbyshireLive.

The keepers had noticed his hoof had become deformed causing him a lot of discomfort, and a decision was taken to operate.

However, despite efforts from the team he died on Monday.

Tributes have been paid to Epesi (Twycross Zoo)

A spokesman for the zoo said: "It comes with great sadness to let you know that one of our beloved male giraffes, Epesi, sadly passed away on Monday, September 23.

"Our keepers noticed that his hoof was becoming deformed which was causing him lots of discomfort.

"After an assessment from our expert veterinary team, it was decided that Epesi needed to have the procedure to correct his hoof.

"This is a high risk procedure and the decision to go ahead was not taken lightly but it was felt strongly by our animal welfare experts that it was in his best interests to proceed.

"Unfortunately despite our dedicated team's best efforts, Epesi sadly passed away.

"Epesi had a wonderful character and was very popular with our visitors.

"We are devastated to say our goodbyes and we will all miss him."
