Two youths arrested in North Belfast on suspicion of riotous behaviour

Two youths were arrested on suspicion of riotous and disorderly behaviour in North Belfast on Friday evening.

Police were tasked to the interface incident at Cliftonpark Avenue, where youths believed to be aged 12 and older, were engaged in verbal and physical violence.

Passers-by were also subjected to abuse from the crowd that had gathered. The two arrested are not believed to be from the North Belfast area.

A PSNI spokesman said: "Oldpark NPT and our LPT colleagues at Tennent Street, tackled an interface incident at Cliftonpark Avenue assisted by our roof mounted camera Land Rover.

"Police saw young persons from the age of approximately 12 years and upwards engaged in verbal and physical exchanges between both communities.

"Persons going about their daily business were also abused by these youths. The residents in the surrounding streets do not want this behaviour and it would appear most of the youths may not be from the immediate area.

"Two young persons were arrested by Police on suspicion of riotous and disorderly behaviour. Neither of these young persons were from the immediate area.

"Police would appeal to parents to check where their children are on these bright nights, advise them not to attend interface areas or engage in anti-social or risk taking behaviour.

"Enjoy the bright nights but let’s respect the area you are in and the folk who live there or you too could end up arrested and with a criminal record."
