Two youths arrested after row which saw up to 40 people obstruct gardai in Salthill, Co Galway

Two young people were arrested at Salthill Beach in Galway after 40 youths attempted to obstruct gardaí during a row.

Multiple units were called to the beach shortly before 7pm on Saturday evening, after patrolling officers observed an altercation between two males.

When gardaí approached the pair, one became aggressive towards the officers, and resisted arrest.

Up to 40 young people then attempted to obstruct gardaí during the course of the arrest.

A number of garda units were called to the scene in an effort to restore peace and disperse the crowd.

Gardaí maintained a presence in the area for a number of hours, conducting patrols throughout the evening.

A garda spokeswoman confirmed that two people, a male and a female youth, were arrested during the course of the incident and taken to Salthill Garda Station.

They have since been released and a file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions in relation to this matter.

A Galway City Councillor today condemned the anti-social behaviour of those involved in Saturday’s incident.

Councillor Eddie Hoare told Galway Bay FM that he was concerned that gardai are being forced to deal with “riots between drunk teenagers” during these challenging times.
