A two-year-old boy who was found unresponsive inside a car parked outside his home in hot weather has died.

Efforts were made to resuscitate Jaxon Stults after he was discovered in Indiana's Daleville township, but he was pronounced dead in an ambulance.

His mother, 28-year-old Britni Nicole Wihebrink, is being held on a preliminary charge of neglect of a dependent.

She called police, telling them she ha taken a nap before finding her son The Star Press newspaper reports.

Asked how long the boy had been in the car, she reportedly responded: ”I have no idea. We took a nap ... We woke up and he was in there.”

Zach Crouch, a Delaware County deputy coroner, said the death was likely heat-related.

James King, the Daleville town marshall, told the paper: “Any child that’s locked in a vehicle in 90-degree weather for a certain amount of time, the heat is going to be a factor.”

An autopsy had planned for later this week.

The National Weather Service said high temperatures in the Daleville area topped 32C (90F) on Wednesday, before cooling off later.
