Two women taken to hospital after three-vehicle crash on A1 in Northumberland

Two women have been taken to hospital with injuries following a crash on the A1 in Northumberland.

Emergency services were alerted to a three-vehicle collision between Felton and Thirston from around 8am this morning.

The A1 was closed in both directions following the crash near the turn-off for Felton from around 8.45am onwards.

Paramedics arrived at the scene and treated two women before transporting them to hospital.

It is understood they sustained non-life threatening injuries in the collision.

A third person was treated at the scene.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We received a call at 8:45am to a three vehicle road traffic collision on the A1 north near Morpeth.

"We sent two ambulances and an officer to the scene.

"We transported two patients to hospital in Cramlington and treated a third at the scene."

A spokesman for Northumbria Police added: "At 8.10am today (Thursday), police received a report of a collision on the A1 between Felton and Thirston.

"It was reported that three vehicles had been involved in the collision.

"Two woman involved have been taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries."

Northumberland Fire & Rescue Service also dispatched crews to help deal with the incident.

A spokesperson said:

"The call came in at 08.12am this morning. We sent appliances from Alnwick, Amble and Pegswood to the scene along with a special reserve unit.

"Three vehicles were involved in the crash and one female was found to be trapped.

"We extricated her and left her in the hands of the paramedics at the scene."

The collision has caused huge disruption to traffic with the A1 being closed in both directions for a number of hours.

The southbound carriageway has now been reopened to drivers.

However, National Highways England said that there is no current estimated time for the reopening of the northbound carriageway with diversions in place.

A spokesman said: "National Highways has resources deployed to assist with traffic management.

"There is currently no estimated time for reopening.

"Road users are advised to expect disruption and to allow extra journey time. You may wish to seek alternative routes or delay your journey."

The road reopened fully at 11:04am and traffic has now returned to normal. The road was closed between 08:45 and 11:00.
