Two women killed when car drives into group of people in Katherine front yard

A group of people were sitting in the front yard of a Katherine house when a vehicle drove into them.

Two women in Katherine have been killed after a car drove into a group of people sitting in a front yard.

The Major Crash Investigation travelled from Darwin to Katherine, about 345km south-east, to the scene, Northern Territory Police said.

"These two women were apparently just sitting in the yard" at about 7:00pm on Saturday night, said Duty Superintendent Rob Burgoyne.

"I believe the vehicle was already in the yard at the time, and a male has entered the vehicle and for some unknown reason at this stage the vehicle has driven forward at speed and the women were trapped underneath."

He said there was a large number of people in the yard, based on about 40 people who were present when emergency services arrived.

They found the women, aged 42 and 58, trapped under the utility vehicle, and they were declared dead at the scene.

The women were the only people injured, he said.

"Unfortunately these two people were apparently sitting and got run over, they were sitting together so they both ended up under the vehicle," he said.

The 18-year-old driver is in police custody.

Police say a report will be prepared for the coroner.
