Two women had to be freed from a car after a crash with a truck in Gateshead.

Smithy Lane between Lamesley and Harlow Green was closed for more than two hours after the collision at the Lamesley Road junction.

Two women were taken by ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead after they were rescued from the car by firefighters.

Two fire crews from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service were called to the scene, as well as police officers and paramedics.

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We received a call at 4.33pm to a road traffic collision involving a car and a truck.

"Two women were trapped in the car and they had to be freed with the help of the fire service.

"We took both to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead after assessing and treating injuries to their back and neck."

The crash was reported at around 4.30pm on Tuesday and by 7pm the vehicles involved had been recovered.

The fire service tweeted that they were assisting the ambulance service at the crash scene and asked drivers to avoid the area.
