Two Vic kids critical after car hits tree

A boy, 11, and a girl, 3, are in a critical condition in Melbourne's Royal Children's Hospital. (AAP)

Two children are fighting for life in hospital after a car crash in regional Victoria.

The car had three children on board when it struck a tree on Monday afternoon after veering off a residential road in Wonthaggi.

An 11-year-old boy in the front seat and a three-year-old girl were flown to Melbourne's Royal Children's Hospital.

They are in a critical but stable condition, according to a hospital statement.

A 17-year-old girl suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Wonthaggi Hospital by road.

The driver, a man in his 40s, escaped with minor injuries.

He was arrested at the scene, but has been released without charge as police continue their investigation.

Anyone with dashcam footage leading up to the crash is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
