Two Venerable Bede Church of England Academy pupils test positive for Covid

A Ryhope school has confirmed that two pupils have tested positive for Covid-19.

The youngsters are in Year 7 and Year 8 at The Venerable Bede Church of England Academy.

The academy confirmed some other pupils are self-isolating, but that lessons are continuing remotely for those affected.

"As soon as we received the information from the parents we immediately acted in the best interests of the whole school community by isolating everyone that the pupils have come into close contact with," said a school spokesperson.

“The isolated group’s parents have been contacted and they have been asked to self-isolate at home and to get tested if they should have any symptoms.

"Any pupils self-isolating have lessons set online so that their learning can continue remotely.

“The school remains open and we continue to follow strict social distancing, cleaning and hygiene protocols and advice.”

It is the latest in a string of cases linked to schools in Sunderland and County Durham.

A dozen schools remain either fully or partially closed due to coronavirus outbreaks.
