Two vehicles set on fire within days in south Bristol

Two vehicles are believed to have been deliberately set on fire within three days in south Bristol.

A van was "obliterated" in a fire on Cutler Road, Bishopsworth, around 6.30am on Monday (June 29), as we reported earlier this week.

Just one mile away, on Backwell Walk in Bedminster Down, a car was set alight around 11.26pm on Friday (June 26).

An Avon and Somerset police spokesman said there is nothing on the incident logs to suggest they are linked.

Police have carried out house-to-house enquiries and are checking CCTV from the area around Backwell Walk following Friday's fire.

An Avon Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: "At 11.26pm on June 26, one crew from Bedminster fire station was mobilised to reports of a car fire at Backwell Walk.

"On arrival, firefighters used one breathing apparatus for safety and one high pressure hose reel to extinguish the fire.

"The cause is thought to be deliberate."

A Cutler Road resident said he heard and felt an "explosion" shortly before 7am on Monday.

He added: "I nearly dropped my coffee after the first boom. Then at about 7am, I heard another, less impressive bang.

"The owner of the van was busy moving other people's cars to make sure they weren't damaged.

"Firefighters were really quick to attend. I'd say literally within five minutes of the first explosion they were there, and it ended as quickly as it started."

The witness described the van as being "obliterated" despite the firefighters' quick arrival.

He said: "I'm just glad the owner and everyone else weren't hurt."

An Avon Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said one crew from Bedminster fire station attended Cutler Road.

"On arrival, firefighters used one breathing apparatus for safety and one high pressure hose reel to extinguish the fire," she said.

"The cause is thought to be deliberate."

There were no casualties in either incident.
