Two unexploded bombs found across Merseyside within 24 hours

Two unexploded devices were found on Merseyside within 24 hours.

The first was discovered in a skip at Veolia West Kirby Recycling Centre on Saturday afternoon while the second emerged at the site of Everton's new stadium at Bramley Moore Docks.

On the Wirral, customers and staff at the centre were moved off site and a cordon established as a precaution and no residential properties were affected.

The Army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team attended and carried out the safe detonation of the device, a suspected World War II mortar, on West Kirby beach.

On the same day, a different device was found at Bramley Moore Docks.

It was transported to Crosby beach and detonated on Sunday morning, at about 9.15am.

Susan Brockbank, 50, from Anfield, was walking along Crosby beach when the bomb was detonated, she said: "It was directly outside the coastguard's office, the bomb disposal, the coastguard and police - but the bomb itself was quite a distance away.

"I go sometimes on a Sunday for a general walk to clear the head. And it wasn't too busy at that time of day, I think that's why they did it then."

The Alder Hey worker added: "There were probably only four or five people standing around by me, and a few runners.

"A lot of people were walking up the beach, and I spoke to a couple afterwards who said they didn't know it was going on and it made them jump quite a bit!

"A police officer did say to myself and a man standing by me, they told us it would probably go off as a little pop - the bomb squad didn't think it would go off with such a loud bang.

"I'm not a fan of big fireworks, so I thought, 'oh, I'll video it then' I'm surprised I got it, it made me jump that much!"
