Two people have been fined a total of more than $2,300 for failing to wear face masks at Hobart Airport.

Tasmania Police said a 49-year-old Melbourne man was fined $1,548 for entering the airport terminal twice without wearing a mask last Saturday.

They said he had been instructed to do so by Biosecurity and police officers.

Police said a 25-year-old man from New South Wales was also fined after an incident on Monday.

They said the man refused to wear a mask when asked by a police officer, claiming he had a medical exemption.

When he was unable to provide a written exemption he was fined $774.

In mid-January, it became mandatory to wear masks in Tasmanian airport terminals — including in car parks — and on commercial flights in Tasmanian airspace.

"The direction to wear face masks was made to protect travellers and the community from the risk of transmission of COVID-19," Inspector Brian Edmonds said.

"Tasmania Police urge all travellers to comply with the direction in the interest of public safety."
