Two-time Punjab MLA Arvind Khanna quits Congress, joins BJP

CHANDIGARH: In a another setback to the incumbent Congress in Punjab, two-time party MLA Arvind Khanna joined BJP in New Delhi on Tuesday. Some others from Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal also joined BJP at the same event.

In addition, Patiala native Kanwar Singh Tohra, grandson of ex-Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) chief late Gurcharan Singh Tohra, also joined BJP. He is son of ex-PWD minister Harmel Singh Tohra, who had switched over from SAD to AAP in August 2016.

BJP may field businessman Khanna from one of the assembly constituencies in Ludhiana for the February 14 state assembly polls. Khanna was elected to the assembly in 2002 from Sangrur and in 2012 from Dhuri constituency.

Considered close to ex-CM Capt Amarinder Singh, he had resigned from Congress as well as from the vidhan sabha membership in January 2015.

Before he joined the Congress in 1998, Khanna was general secretary of SAD’s youth wing.

SAD general secretary Gurdeep Singh Gosha also joined BJP on Tuesday.
