Two thirds of West Yorkshire fire resource is being taken up by moor fires

The Group Manager for West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service says that around around two thirds of resources are being taken up by moor fires in Ilkley and Marsden.

14 crews battled the huge blaze at Ilkley Moor, and on Easter Monday as many as 15 fire engines were tackling the Marsden Moor blaze which started on Sunday evening.

Speaking on Monday to ExaminerLive from the control room in Birkenshaw, Dave Teggart, Group Manager for West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said that he was putting out the call to fire services outside of West Yorkshire to come and help them.

Greater Manchester is set to help in the fight, but other crews from further afield might also be required.

Discussing the Marsden fire, Teggart said: "The day is starting to warm up and as we move to the hottest part of the day the heat of the fire intensifies.

"We're tackling the rear of the fire, working from the flanks trying to pincer in.

"We have the helicopter which is taking water from a nearby reservoir to drop water on strategic locations that are the hardest for staff on the ground to reach."
