Two test centres open in areas of Newport worst affected by Covid

New Covid-19 test centres will be opening in the areas of Newport currently worst affected by the virus, Aneurin Bevan University Health Board has confirmed.

The new mobile units will provide tests for residents of Gaer, Rogerstone, Pye Corner and Graig, all of which rank among the worst affected wards in Newport in terms of infection rates.

As of Monday, Gaer was the area of Newport with the highest rate of infections, with 1,455.3 reported cases per 100,000 people. Rogertone ranked third with 1,267.9, and Pye Corner & Graig (which are counted together) was fourth with 1,124.7.

Four areas within Newport, Gaer, Ringland, Rogerstone and Pye Corner & Graig, also ranked within the top 10% of areas across Wales in terms of incidence rates.

On Tuesday, WalesOnline reported that between December 11 and 17, Newport recorded 917.4 cases of coronavirus per 100,000 people, making it the fifth worst affected local authority area in Wales.

The new testing units for Newport will be located in Gaer and Rogerstone, and will provide a walk-up testing service.

The first of these units will be located at Rogerstone Primary School on Ebenezer Drive, and will operate between December 24 and 26. It will be open between 10am and 4pm on December 24 and 26, and between 11am and 3pm on December 25.

The second will be at Ysgol Bryn Derw ASD Special School on Melfort Road, and will operate between December 27 and 29. It will be open between 10am and 4pm on December 27 and 29, and between 11am and 3pm on December 28.

Both test centres are for residents of Newport only and those using them will be required to bring an ID and proof of address with them.

Walk-up test centres also require people using them to arrive by foot or by bike, not by car.

People can book a coronavirus test on the UK Government's website.
