Two temporary mobile coronavirus testing sites set up in Sunderland

Mobile coronavirus testing sites have been set up at two locations in Sunderland .

The unit is at Brinkburn Crescent, Houghton-le-Spring, for anyone needing a test until September 22, with tests between 10am and 3pm.

Testing will also take place at Sunderland Azure Court, Doxford Park, between 11am and 3pm until September 20.

Health bosses are reminding people they should only book a test if they have coronavirus symptoms or have been asked to get tested.

It comes as Sunderland residents were warned a local lockdown was “very close” following a steep increase in cases.

There were 244 new positive cases in the seven days to Tuesday, September 8.

This equates to around 75 cases per 100,000 people - three times higher than the national rate.

On Thursday, the city had the second highest infection rate in England.

A total of 61 people have tested positive for the virus who have been linked to a charity football match at Burnside Working Men’s Club, in Fence Houses.

Anyone who attended the event on Sunday 30 August has been asked to self-isolate until midnight on September 13 – 14 days from the date of the event.

Now the city has been placed on Public Health England's watch list for 'enhanced support' in the fight against Covid-19.

Leader of Sunderland City Council, Councillor Graeme Miller and chair of the Sunderland Outbreak Control Board said: "We welcome the Secretary of State's decision to make Sunderland an area of 'enhanced support'.

"At the moment this is about support for Sunderland, not restrictions.

"Yet, we are very close to a local lockdown if there is not a rapid and drastic reduction in the number of cases.

“The virus is spreading across Sunderland and we need to work together to stop it.

"It is very simple: The current situation is extremely serious and if more people do not take more responsibility and act more sensibly then we will go back into a lockdown. This is our last chance."
