Two teenagers have been arrested on suspicion of rape as part of an investigation into a serious sexual assault in Co Down.
The males, aged 18 and 19, are being questioned following the report of a serious sexual assault on a young female in the vicinity of Portaferry Road in Newtownards on Sunday morning.
At around 6.25am, September 15, a young female reported that she had been assaulted by a number of males in the vicinity of Londonderry Park, a short time earlier, Belfast Live reports.
A 28-year-old man arrested earlier today remains in police custody at this time.
Alliance Councillor for Newtownards Nick Mathison said he was shocked to hear of the incident.
“I am shocked and appalled by this incident and my thoughts are with the victim at this difficult time.
“Attacks such as these send shockwaves through the local community. It is disturbing such an incident could take place in our town. We must ensure the streets are safe for all.
“I urge anyone with information on this incident to contact police with it immediately.”
Detective Sergeant Lennon continues to appeal to anyone who was in the vicinity of Londonderry Park or Portaferry Road early this morning and who witnessed this incident or anyone who has information that could assist Police with their enquiries to contact detectives in Newtownards on 101, quoting reference 554 15/09/19.
