Two teenagers arrested in Alice Springs after stolen car chase

Police in Alice Springs have arrested two boys in a stolen car — a 14-year-old driver and a 16-year-old passenger — following a chase overnight.

Police said they saw a stolen Hyundai Accent driving "recklessly" through the Alice Springs central business district, endangering pedestrians and other drivers.

NT Police said they used CCTV footage and drones to track the Hyundai shortly after 10:00pm yesterday before apprehending the two teenagers.

"A coordinated effort by officers from Strike Force Viper, the drone pilot and general duties officers on duty last night were quick to effect this arrest," NT Police Detective Senior Sergeant Rob Jordan said.

"The vehicle has been seized for further forensic testing."

A second car, a silver Toyota Corolla with no registration plates attached, was also stolen last night in Alice Springs.

Senior Sergeant Jordan said the Toyota had also been driven "recklessly" in the town, but it had not yet been located.

"The driving behaviour of these youths is extremely concerning," he said.

"I can't stress enough that although it's a right to be able to leave doors unlocked and belongings anywhere, the reality is there are people who do not respect this."

"I ask that everyone be mindful in locking their houses at night and when not home.

"Do not leave your car keys easily accessible to would-be crooks."

"If we take away any opportunities from these youths it will assist in reducing this type of behaviour."
