Two teenagers arrested after racist graffiti in Port Talbot

Two teenage boys have been arrested after racist graffiti was painted on a mural in Port Talbot. Swastikas, the words "Nazi zone" and a racial slur were painted on the mural, and was discovered by members of the community on October 28.

The mural was initially a part of the Street Art Trail and had been been created by the ARTWalk community group to celebrate the town's Caribbean community. The graffiti has since been painted over and the mural has been restored.

South Wales Police have now confimed that two teenagers - whom they have not provided ages - have been arrested in connection with the incident. The two teenage boys have been arrested on suspicion of racially and religiously aggravated criminal damage.

The teenagers, from Port Talbot and Tonyrefail, have been taken to Queens Road police station in Bridgend where they are being questioned. Police say a number of property searches are currently being completed.

The original mural was to represent the Caribbean community within Port Talbot through portraits of Donna Campbell, born and raised in the town, and a portrait of her mother, Mrs Campbell, who came to Wales during the Windrush period.

Superintendent Stephen Jones said: “Hateful behaviour of this nature will not be tolerated. “I want to reassure the local community that a full investigation is being undertaken with a view to ensuring those responsible are held fully accountable for their abhorrent actions.”
