Two taken to hospital after serious car crash outside pub in County Durham

Two people have been taken to hospital after a crash outside a pub in County Durham.

The incident happened outside the Blue House in Salter's Lane, Haswell , at about 11.45am on New Year's Day.

Police and paramedics attended the scene and Salter's Lane was closed in both directions between the Church View junction and the Blue House as the two people received treatment.

Both patients, believed to have been in the same vehicle, were taken to James Cook University Hospital, one with pelvic and leg injuries. The other's injuries are currently unknown.

A spokesperson for North East Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 11.46am to reports of a one-vehicle road traffic collision outside the Blue House pub in Haswell.

“One patient has been taken to James Cook University Hospital’s emergency room and a second has been taken to the same hospital with pelvic and lower limb injuries.”

A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary confirmed they had closed the road in both directions and that they would be at the scene for some time.

The incident caused traffic to come to a standstill and drivers were urged to avoid the area.
