Two taken to hospital after fire rips through houses

Two people have been taken to hospital after a fire at a Merseyside housing development.

A fire ripped through three homes under construction including a three-storey town house and two two-storey homes.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue service sent crews from four engines to the Pavilion Gardens development, on Blowick Moss Lane, Southport.

North West Ambulance service confirmed that the two people taken to hospital suffered minor injuries.

A fire service spokesperson told the ECHO that the fire involved an external gas main and spread to the homes.

At one point the fire had spread in the cavity involving all floors and the roof space of the three-storey house.

They said: "Crews were alerted at 09.01am on Tuesday September 28 and on scene at 09.08am.

"Four fire engines are in attendance as well as the combined platform ladder appliance."

Cadent confirmed that one of the service pipes carrying gas from the mains into a property was damaged on the construction site.

A spokesman for Merseyside’s gas emergency service Cadent said: "As a result of third-party activity at this construction site this morning, a service pipe – the narrow pipe carrying gas from the bigger main into a property – sustained damage.

"Our teams arrived on site quickly, isolated the supply to the three unoccupied premises – making everything safe – and are leaving site shortly.

"Calling the gas emergency service on 0800 111 999 is incredibly important when something like this happens.

"That’s the same number to ring if you ever smell gas or suspect the presence of carbon monoxide. All calls are recorded and may be monitored."

David Wilson Homes North West, who are working on the homes on site, told the ECHO they'd like to thank the emergency services.

A spokesperson said: "There was a small fire in an unoccupied building under construction at our Pavilion Gardens development in Southport today.

"We would like to thank the emergency services for their swift response in making the site safe."
