Two suspected catalytic converter thieves arrested

Two suspected catalytic converter thieves have been arrested after a tip-off from an eagle-eyed person in Tameside.

Police in the borough said they were called by someone in Mossley at around 1.15am in the early hours of Wednesday, September 2.

Officers said a Honda car was seen being jacked up before the catalytic converter was stolen.

Thefts have become rife in recent years.

Police said the caller managed to get the get the registration of the car the thieves fled in.

Officers caught up with the vehicle before arresting two people.

The car was also seized. A catalytic coverter was found.

In a Facebook post, GMP Tameside North and East said: "We played catch up to Oldham and found the car not far from where it was registered to with 2 x males matching the description still present in the vehicle.

"Thanks to our Oldham colleagues for attending as one of the males became confrontational on being detained).

"Inside the vehicle was a large car jack and various tools all adding to our suspicions.

"Following a search of a nearby address linked to one of the males 1 x catalytic converter was recovered. Both males arrested on suspicion of theft and vehicle seized as used in crime."

They added: "Thanks to the member of the public for their call which allowed us to attend quickly and carry out a prompt investigation.

"Both males await questioning at custody."
