Two Supreme Court justices to testify before Congress in rare Capitol Hill appearance

  • Supreme Court Justices Amy Coney Barrett and Elena Kagan are scheduled to testify before Congress next week, marking the first such appearance by sitting justices since 2019.
  • They will appear before House and Senate Appropriations subcommittees to discuss the Supreme Court's budget request for fiscal year 2027.
  • The Supreme Court has requested a $20.6 million budget increase for the 2027 fiscal year, more than $16 million of which would be directed towards security for the justices , both at work and at home, the Washington Post reports.
  • This request for increased security funding is prompted by a reported rise in political violence and direct threats against members of the Supreme Court.
  • While the hearings will primarily focus on budgeting, the justices may also face questions regarding the court's recent consequential term, which included decisions impacting the Trump administration's executive power and election influence.
