Two snow weather warnings issued for Scotland as 20cm expected to fall

A further two weather warnings have been issued for snow in Scotland ahead of an unsettled week.

The first of the warnings will come into effect across the north of Scotland from midnight tonight.

Forecasters say that around 3cm of snow could land over a 12-hour period, before the warning concludes at midday on Monday.

Aberdeenshire, the Highlands and the Orkney Islands are among the places to experience the worst of the conditions.

But it will worsen for southern and north eastern parts of Scotland from 10pm on Monday.

Experts say that around eight inches of snow could land in areas of high ground during a 26 hour spell of winter weather.

The warning will be in place until 11.59pm on Tuesday for the likes of Dundee, Perth, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Travel is expected to be heavily disrupted as a result of the conditions throughout Monday and Tuesday.

A forecast from the Met Office reads: “A band of rain, locally heavy in places, is likely to push slowly northeast across parts of the UK. As this rain comes into contact with cold air in place, it is likely to readily turn to snow away from eastern coastal districts.

Forecasters are expecting the wintry weather to continue into February (PA)

“1-4cm of snow is quite likely away from eastern coasts, with 5-10cm possible in places, most likely across southern Scotland and above 150m over northern England.

“Potential for 20 cm or more across higher parts of the northern England and Scotland. As well as snow, a period of freezing rain is possible for parts of east Wales and the north Midlands.

“Should this occur widespread icy stretches would form. Snow should turn back to rain from the south, lasting longest across parts of northern England and Scotland.”

The new weather warnings come in addition to another two issued for Wednesday this week. As much as 15 inches could land on parts of Grampians throughout the 24 hours.

Beast from the East 2 fears have been ramped up in recent days as forecasters predict “disruptive snowfall” to land in Scotland to continue well into February.

In a long-range forecast for the UK, experts have warned that the “risk of wintry hazards continues to be greater than normal” during the end of next month.
