Two smaller counties see big jumps in Covid-19 cases today as Ireland's four worst-hit spots pinpointed

Wicklow and Mayo have seen big jumps in Covid-19 cases today, according to the latest figures.

A further 270 coronavirus cases were confirmed on Wednesday evening with five further deaths.

Of the cases, 58 are in Dublin, 38 in Donegal, 28 in Wicklow, 25 in Mayo, 24 in Limerick and the remaining 97 cases are spread across 21 other counties.

However, in more positive news, Ireland’s current 7-Day incidence rate per 100,000 population is 40.2.

Donegal, Louth, Kilkenny and Limerick remain the counties with the highest 14-day incidence rate.

Ireland now has the lowest 14-day incidence of Covid-19 in the EU.

Chief medical officer Dr Tony Holohan said: "It is important to keep up the progress that we have achieved in recent weeks.

"Ireland now has the lowest 14-day incidence of Covid-19 in the EU according the latest ECDC (European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control) figures and we need to hold firm to this position.

"As the country moves into Level 3, there is no room for complacency in our response to Covid-19."

Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly (Julien Behal/PA Wire)

Health Minister Stephen Donnelly says it is his view that the Covid-19 vaccine will be rolled out for free. "My unambiguous view would be just like the flu vaccine, the State would cover all costs."

He added that vaccine distribution may begin in early January.
