Two Sligo dual stars to line out for hurlers and footballers in less than 24 hours

Sligo football manager Paul Taylor is hoping his two dual stars make it through tomorrow’s Nicky Rackard Cup final in good shape to help him to the first win of his reign on Sunday.

Sligo play Offaly in Round 2 of the football qualifiers at O’Connor Park on Sunday but 22 hours earlier Gerard O’Kelly-Lynch and Michael Gordon will be part of the Sligo hurling team that faces off against Armagh in the fourth tier hurling final.

Both games were due to be played on Saturday but Sligo GAA requested the football clash be played on the Sunday which has given the talented duo the chance to represent both teams, as they have done all year.

“Hopefully they’ll come through that game alright and be available for selection for us. It’s a tough weekend for them both,” said Taylor. “They have committed to both games for the season and fair play to them for that. From a fixtures point of view we feel it’s not very fair on them and it will be a difficult weekend for the hurlers and for us.

“We have worked well with the hurling management all year. We’ll continue to do that, but it’s the players that it’s tough on.”

Sligo were relegated to Division 4 of the League on the back of seven defeats, while a 13-point loss to Galway consigned them to the back door route.

Taylor will also be without goalkeeper Aidan Devaney (ankle) and defender Eoin McHugh (knee).

“We had a great battle with Offaly in Collooney in the League and it’s a game we felt we should’ve won,” said Taylor. “We feel that we’re much stronger than we were in the League.”
