Two shootings carried out 25 minutes apart may be linked

Two shootings carried out within 25 minutes might be linked, according to police.

Officers were called to Windermere Drive and Stocks Road, in Kirkby , between 6pm and 7pm on Monday night after reports of attacks at two houses .

Detectives are keeping an 'open mind' whether the two incidents are linked.

A shotgun was fired at the front door of a home on Windermere Drive at 6.25pm between witnesses saw two "mopeds or bikes" leave the street and head in the direction of Kirkby town centre.

Just over a mile away, on Stocks Road, at 6.50pm a number of shots were fired at a house and a car on nearby Mossborough Road.

Shortly after the targeted attacks, detectives said they were keeping an "open mind" over whether the two shootings were connected but on Tuesday officers confirmed they do not believe the incidents to be linked.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said that detectives are still in the early stages of their investigations and are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

In response to the attacks, Detective Chief Inspector Matt Smith said: “It is totally unacceptable to use firearms recklessly in a residential area and we are doing all we can to find those responsible.

"We can only find the offenders with the help of our community and we ask anyone with information to speak to us and help us keep firearms out of our neighbourhoods.

“We have also put additional patrols on the streets to reassure the local community that we are doing all we can to make our neighbourhoods safer.

“I understand that people will be concerned and may be too frightened to speak directly to us, if this is the case then please give information anonymously through Crimestoppers.

“Any information may help us, no matter how small it is so please help us identify those responsible.”

After the two shootings, a Section 60 order was put in place in Kirkby, giving police special stop and search powers in order to prevent more serious or violent crime.

This has now been extended to run until 2am on Wednesday morning.
