Two ships attacked in Strait of Hormuz as fragile Iran ceasefire cracks

  • An Iranian gunboat from the paramilitary Revolutionary Guard opened fire on and damaged a container ship in the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday morning.
  • A second vessel was also fired upon later the same day as it exited the Strait, though it sustained no damage and its crew were safe.
  • The incidents occurred hours after Donald Trump offered to extend a ceasefire with Iran, which had been due to expire.
  • Iran's state media claimed the first vessel 'ignored warnings', while the UKMTO reported the gunboat did not hail the ship before firing.
  • These actions followed the US seizure of an Iranian container ship and the boarding of an oil tanker associated with Iran's oil trade over the weekend.
