Two 'seriously' injured in M1 crash as queues stretch for miles

Two people have suffered "serious" injuries following a three vehicle pile up on the M1 near Leeds that is causing huge delays.

Three lanes have been closed on the northbound carriageway north of Wakefield between J40, A639 Wakefield Road to J41, A650 Carr Gate after a collision between two cars and a van.

Police have said that a man and woman suffered injuries as a result of the crash, which happened around 11.40am this morning (Saturday).

At its worst, there was four miles of queuing traffic on the busy road following the collision, which has now been cleared.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: "Emergency services were called to the M1 northbound at junction 41 at about 11.40am on Saturday to a report of a collision involving two cars and a van.

"A man and woman suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries in the incident which resulted in three of four lanes of the motorway being closed at the junction."

Highways England posted shortly after 2pm to say that the crash has been "resolved" and the lane closures removed, though there were still delays of around 40 minutes in the area.
