Woman killed in day of two horror crashes in the Riverland

Police at the scene of the crash on the Sturt Highway at Yamba.

A 45-year-old woman has died in a crash between a B-double and a car at the intersection of the Sturt Highway and the Old Sturt Highway in South Australia's Riverland.

Police said the woman died at scene after the vehicles collided Barmera at about 7:30pm on Tuesday.

Her two children, a 12-year-old boy and a 10-year-old girl, received minor injuries and were taken to Berri Hospital.

The truck driver was not injured.

Police said the intersection remained closed and urged motorists to avoid the area.

The woman's death takes the state's road toll to 28 for the year, up from 17 at the same time last year.

During a horror day on the roads in the Riverland area, two people suffered critical injuries after their vehicles collided on the Sturt Highway at Yamba, near the South Australian–Victorian border on Tuesday morning.

A 37-year-old man from the Adelaide suburb of Northfield and a 48-year-old Mildura woman were initially treated at the Renmark Paringa District Hospital before being airlifted to the Royal Adelaide Hospital, where they remain in a stable condition.

The Sturt Highway was closed for about three hours.

For most of Tuesday, SA Ambulance Service's internet network was down, affecting non-critical electronic communications at the agency.

The service's chief executive, David Place, said there were multiple contingencies for these types of scenarios.

"I think it's really important to state that our triple zero core handling and dispatch of ambulances wasn't affected at all, so there's been no public safety issues today," he said.

Access to maps tracking the location of crews, as well as hospital admission boards, were down intermittently, meaning they fell back on more traditional communications, using radios and telephones.
