Two Scots paedophiles die behind bars within 24 hours in week before Christmas

Investigations have been launched after two Scots prisoners died within 24 hours of each other.

Richard McCormick and Alexander Morgan, who were jailed for a series of depraved sex crimes, passed away on December 17 and December 18 in custody at HMP Edinburgh.

Probes are now being carried out into the inmates deaths by Mandatory Fatal Accident Inquiries (FAIs).

Scottish Prison Service (SPS) bosses at Saughton have also submitted reports to the Procurator Fiscal, reports Edinburgh Live.

McCormick, an ex offshore worker, was previously seized at Heathrow Airport in 2014 - eight years after some of his victims came forward.

The 74-year-old preyed upon children as young as three at homes across the Falkirk and Denny areas over a period of 20 years before being apprehended after banking information showed he had actively made transactions in Qatar and Thailand.

One victim told how she ‘couldn’t bear to be in the same room’ as McCormick before he was sentenced in 2016 as she recalled his campaign of harrowing abuse.

McCormick was sentenced to eight years in prison in 2016.

Meanwhile Morgan, 73, was handed an additional eight years behind bars in April after he was found guilty of attacking two young girls in Paisley and Blantyre, one of whom was just 11 years old, in 1995.

Morgan was already serving a ten-year term for previous offences, including the rape of another young girl in Paisley, imposed in 2015.

His additional eight year stretch had been due to take effect from the end of his first sentence.

“Richard McCormick, a prisoner from HMP Edinburgh has died on December 17, 2021,” a statement from the SPS read.

“He was sentenced at Edinburgh High Court in 2016. Police Scotland have been advised and the matter reported to the Procurator Fiscal.

The service added: “Alexander Morgan, a prisoner from HMP Edinburgh died on December 18, 2021.

“He was sentenced at Glasgow High Court in 2015. Police Scotland have been advised and the matter reported to the Procurator Fiscal.

“Fatal Accident Inquiries will be held in due course.”

Police Scotland has been contacted for comment.
