Two Scandinavian women have been found dead with cuts to their necks in Moroccan mountains.

The two tourists were found near the town of Imil, in the High Atlas mountain range, near the foot of North Africa’s highest peak, Mount Toubkal, the country’s interior minister said.

Both bodies were found in an isolated area, the minister added.

An investigation has been opened to determine the circumstances of how the women came to be there.

The two women, from Denmark and Norway, have not yet been named.

Toubkal is a popular trekking and hiking destination 50 miles south of Morocco's largest tourist hub, Marrakech.
