Two rushed to hospital after fire breaks out at supported living flats

Two people were rushed to hospital after a fire broke out at a block of supported living flats.

Emergency services were called to Egerton Park in Wirral shortly after 3pm on Wednesday after reports of a blaze at a building.

Paramedics, fire crews and police arrived at the scene, believed to be Palmer Villas, a supported living property for people with mental health and learning difficulties.

An air ambulance also landed at nearby Victoria Park and is believed to have taken two patients to hospital a short time later.

A spokesperson for the North West Ambulance Service said: "The service was called at 3.08pm to reports of a fire at a private address.

"The air ambulance and two land ambulances were dispatched to the scene and two patients were taken to hospital.

"One patient suffered burns in the fire but the injuries of the second patient are not yet known."

Forensic officers from Merseyside Police were seen coming and going from the block of flats over the next few hours.

A witness at the scene told the ECHO : "I heard an alarm going off at about 3:10pm and thought 'God what’s that noise.'

“One fire engine came and then another one and another.

“An ambulance came too and I heard someone saying ‘stand back, stand back.’

“A man got wheeled out on a stretcher and a woman that worked there was looking really shaken up.”

Another person said that a specialist doctor was brought to the scene.

They said: “We came out when we heard a helicopter going over the house making a right racket.

“I don’t know if it was related but it landed in the field nearby and the driver said he was bringing a specialist doctor and a paramedic to someone.

“Then when I got back to my house there were three fire engines and ambulances here.

“A man was sat in a chair breathing into an oxygen.

“And ten minutes later someone was taken on a stretcher into the back of an ambulance.

“It’s scary to think what could have happened."

It is not yet clear what caused the fire and the conditions of the two injured people are not known.
