Dec. 31--Two Round Lake Beach men who allegedly shot at and robbed an acquaintance who was giving them a ride Wednesday night have been charged with armed robbery, police said.
A 20-year-old man told police two acquaintances, Arturo Lopez, 20, and Jonathan Caballero, 23, asked him for a ride before 9:30 p.m., according to a statement from Round Lake Beach police.
While the man was driving in the 1600 block of Juneway Terrace, they told him to stop the car and Lopez demanded money, police said. When the man fought back, Caballero allegedly told Lopez to shoot. Lopez fired multiple shots from a handgun but the driver was not injured, according to the statement.
The driver fled and called police, while Lopez and Caballero left in his car, along with an unknown amount of cash that was in the vehicle, police said.
Police said they later found both Lopez and Caballero at one of their homes with the gun while the car was found nearby.
Both men were charged with armed robbery, aggravated discharge of a firearm and possession of a stolen vehicle. Caballero was also charged with theft and Lopez is also facing charges of unlawful use of a weapon by a street gang member, unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.
In court Thursday, a Lake County judge ordered each held on $250,000 bond and both men remain in custody of Thursday morning, said Round Lake Beach police deputy chief Michael Scott.
